Renewal Course

Description

A newly developed National CPS Certification Renewal Course is now available and we will be offering renewal class throughout the state of Wisconsin.

The 1 day course includes lecture, skills testing and a written test.  It is NOT an update/refresher course.  It is meant for expired technicians who would like to become nationally certified CPS technicians again.  Expired techs who are interested must have stayed involved in CPS and kept up with technical changes in the field by attending conferences, reading technical materials, and working with certified technicians or instructors.

Child Passenger Safety technicians are valuable and essential resources to their communities as they assess and assist with the transportation needs of children.

Here are renewal class opportunities in WI. (Check back for updates or call 715-346-0055)

CERTIFICATION RENEWAL COURSE
The new Certification Renewal Course was designed for all former technicians who have maintained their child passenger safety knowledge and skills. Prior to its development, CPS technicians with expired certifications had to go through the entire course in order to become certified again. Now, former technicians may attend a one-day course and upon successful completion, be eligible for recertification.

A few frequently asked questions are attached. Detailed information may be found on the Certification website in the Policies and Procedures: Course Administration section. Go to the Child Passenger Safety Board’s website at
www.cpsboard.org and click on Class Registration and CPS Certification to link to the SAFE KIDS CPS Certification site.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS – CERTIFICATION RENEWAL COURSE

What is contained in this new course?
The one-day Certification Renewal Course (CRC) provides

1.      A brief overview of the technical information contained in the most recent version of the National Standardized Child Passenger Safety Training Program curriculum

2.      It verifies your technical skills through hands-on testing

3.      A written test

Who should attend?
The CRC was developed for previously certified technicians who have maintained their child passenger safety knowledge and their hands-on skills through reading technical updates, attending other CPS classes, participating in child passenger safety events and by continuing to practice their hands-on skills.  This course is not intended as an opportunity to practice or ‘brush up’ on installation skills, nor is it an occasion to ‘learn’ CPS again.

Can a presently certified technician/instructor attend?
Another group that may want to consider attending would be currently certified technicians needing to earn continuing education units (CEU’s) for re-certification.  For every 45 minutes of participation a technician can earn a CEU. Contact the
CPS training administrator or course instructor for information on auditing the course.

Who can teach this new course?
Any currently certified instructor may teach the CRC. Up to 10 hours spent teaching this course may be applied toward the instructor re-certification requirement.

What happens after the renewal course is successfully completed?
Upon successful completion of the CRC, the student is a certified technician, and can resume the role as CPS advocate and educator in their community.

What happens if the renewal class is not completed successfully?

Expired technicians may find that their skills are a bit too rusty and they have not had access to all the new curriculum updates.  As a result, they may not be able to successfully complete the renewal course.  It will be necessary for them to take the entire CPS certification course again.

Where can I get renewal course materials?
Please be advised that all renewal class participants should refer to the current curriculum.  It can downloaded from the CPS Board web site
(www.cpsboard.org)
